We continue to finalise scenarios and test some of the latest material. We have a couple of long awaited scenarios delivered this week and also some adjustments to existing work. For example, based upon play testing we have significantly shortened the full Cherbourg scenario from 88 turns to 42. This still covers multiple days, but with a revised day length and other tweaks. We also added a version against the German AI that can be played in 30 turns and fits into the large but relatively short category.

Some more mundane items such as documentation and 'shrunk' graphics are also being worked on and one of these days I'll count how many counters are in game - it's not a small number and every one of them have been done by hand. All in all we're making good progress - despite everyone having day jobs.

For this week's scenario listing we are going to be Commonwealth centric again. Montgomery's forces near Caen were viewed as more likely to breakout than US in the West and the bulk of German forces faced the British. This results in a lot of fighting in that area. All these situations are during the month of July, 1944.

The first scenario is another special from Jeff Conner. As mentioned last week, Jeff has done a heap of work on the British offensives after the landings and Operation Goodwood/Operation Atlantic is his next series after Operation Epsom. Of note, Glenn Saunders and Dave Blackman did some original scenarios here, but we have completely reworked both their Epsom and Goodwood work. Jeff has combined both Operation Goodwood and Operation Atlantic that commenced after the Canadians had finally cleared Caen. The attack by the British was preceded by the use of RAF heavy bombers to disrupt the defenders. This proved to be reasonably successful allowing the British to advance on their left flank;

The next three Goodwood scenarios were created by Saunders and Blackie and were adjusted by Jeff. These cover segments of the Goodwood battle and are quick little scenarios.

3rd Royal Tank Regiment Part 1, is a 12 turn scenario covering the advance of the British left flank.

Imagen

The Fifes and 23rd Hussars covers the follow on forces that pass through the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment and continue south. This 10 turn scenario covers the situation the Regiment found itself in when the Germans caught the British in the flank due to the forces in the destroyed village of Cagny. This image shows what the top down graphics included in game look like;

Imagen

6 turnicos de naaaa.

The third small Goodwood scenario is 3rd Royal Tank Regiment Part 2. This short 6 turn scenario covers the regiments efforts after crossing the raised rail line and the push towards Hubert-Folie;

Imagen

Moving away from the Caen sector, #0726 Percy covers the second day of the US attack of Operation Cobra. VII Corps had committed it's armour to penetrate deep into the German rear after the US carpet bombing smashed up Panzer Lehr. The Percy scenario is interesting due to the length of the map and the expected speed the 2nd Armored Division was expected to advance. This is quite a different scenario

Imagen

Three days after Percy, Notre-Dame covers the ambush of a kampfgruppe from Das Reich as it attempted to get back to German lines. This 6 turn scenario see the Germans trying to overrun the American blocking forces;

Imagen

Last but not least in our Cobra trilogy, St-Martin & Roncey covers a similar action where the retreating Germans have to push through Allied pickets. This is another short 8 turn scenario starting at 4am.

Imagen

"2 - What things do you like most in PzB Normandy? The variety. There are more nationalities, more match-ups in ratings and more variance in the terrain and situations you fight in. We're covering close to three months fighting (vs 10 days in Kursk) over a huge area where armies (plural) were engaged."

The first scenario, 'Operation Bluecoat - Baffing up the Charlie Love' is the longest scenario we have ever done in Panzer Battles. It is a 144 turn marathon covering July 30 to August 3rd, a total of 5 days. There is a special PDT file which truncates the day and night cycle.

The scenario description is as follows;

Caumont, West of Caen: July 30th, 1944. (Scenario Size: Corp. Head to Head or Team Play) Operation Bluecoat was to be the complementary offensive to the USA's July 25th Cobra operation. With the success of Cobra evident by July 28th, the British accelerated Bluecoat by two days and planned to kick off on July 30th. VIII Corps was to be the flank guard for XXX Corps which was to attack towards Villers Bocage, but when VIII Corps unexpectedly broke through the German defenses on an army boundary, all effort was put behind them. With the road to Vire open the Germans had to pull II SS-Panzerkorps out of the line at Caen and attempt to close the gap between the German armies. This multi-day campaign will require players to carefully husband their forces as no replacements will be received. Fresh forces will arrive regularly, but will have to go to the position of most need. The British will have to push hard early on to capture the key locations before the SS arrive. Historical note: 'Baffing up the Charlie Love' means 'Move fast up the Centre Line of the advance'. Centre Line in the British 1944 phonetic alphabet is 'Charlie Love'

Here is an overview of the starting positions and size of map at the highest zoom out (remember you can see this full size with a right click or touch device). The US Army was on the western side facing the Fallschirm-jaeger while the British faced the 326th Infanterie Division. Both sides initially didn't realise that their army boundaries were aligned and were to play a significant part in the operation;

Imagen

:lol:
Here is the British 11th Armoured and 15th Infantry Division setup before heading south. The German 326th Infanterie Division had just replaced the 2nd Panzer Division in the 'quiet sector' in front of Caumont and the British surprised the German defenders when they managed to move three armoured divisions from the area around Caen undetected;

Imagen

This monster scenario has gone through 5 revisions and a heap of play testing. The original for example was 170 turns long (thanks Dennis & Ed for actually playing it through and getting a draw!). It's an exercise in stamina, particularly for the German where the 326th Infanterie Division is pretty much destroyed in the first 24 hours of the British offensive. This is what happened historically. Both sides get substantial reinforcements with the Guards Armoured Division arriving for the British and the 21st Panzer Division and elements of the 9th, 10th & 12th SS Divisions for the Germans.

Here is an example of a play test after 33 turns and the British have managed to reach the high ground at Hill 309 near the Bois du Homme. Note the Jagdpanthers shown - a whole company as well as a company of King Tigers took part in the battle. This screen shot is taken from a slightly older version of the game;

Imagen

Bois du Homme is a 12 turn scenario that covers the ill fated attempt by 21st Panzer to take back Hill 309 from the Churchills of the 4th Coldstream Guards. The Germans originally had some success, but the dogged defence supported by Allied artillery and Typhoons tipped the balance;

Imagen

Otro mas de 12 turnicos.

The next 12 turn scenario covers the 11th Armoured Divisions push across 'Dickies Bridge' and the attempt to clear Beny Bocage and the push on to Catheolles. The British had expected to have real difficulty getting across the Souleuvre river and planned to assault Catheolles from the north. British armoured cars managed to advance down the German army boundary and capture an unguarded bridge that was subsequently christened Dickies Bridge in honour of its captor. This allowed the British to roll up the defences along the river and secure the crossing points

Imagen

Kampfgruppe Frohlich is an interesting little meeting engagement pulled together by Glenn Saunders. The British were probing to the west with the Cromwell tanks from 2nd Welsh Guards, part of Guards Armoured Division. They ran smack bang into Kampfgruppe Frohlich; a scratch formation pulled together of arriving SS and retreating Wehrmacht troops;

Imagen

Escenario pequeñito de 8 turnos.

la Bistere - Tigers Marsch! is a 8 turn free for all covering the advance north of the Tigers of SS-sPz-Abt 102. The Germans decimated the 2nd Northants Yeomanry that had been probing down the highway to Vire. The Germans advanced all the way to la Bistiere destroying the bulk of the British forces;

Imagen

7 turnitos.

Les Grands Bonfaits - Nedforce is another 7 turn Glenn Saunders special. This scenario covers the German attempt to push the British back off the high ground near le Busq;

Imagen

Finally, the British had a real opportunity to take Vire during Operation Bluecoat. General Montgomery decided to leave the town to the following US Forces as it was nominally in the US sector. This decision was to cause heavy casualties for the Americans when they finally went to capture and clear the town on August 5th. The Germans in the meantime managed to reinforce the town with elements from both the 3rd Fallschirm-jaeger Division and 353rd Infanterie Division;

#0606_09: Villiers-le-Sec: Moving Inland covers the counterattack by Oberst-Leutenant Meyer's 915 Infanterie Regiment on the afternoon of D-Day. The Germans met the British head on in what became a confused meeting engagement. This is a tight little 8 turn scenario down by Glenn Saunders;

Imagen

#0611_02: Advance to Cristot covers the attack by 69th Infantry Brigade (British 50th Infantry Division) to reduce the salient 12th SS Hitlerjugend was holding to try and reach the coast from. This is the sister scenario to #0611_01: Misery at le Mesnil-Patry. Cristot starts at 10 am and covered the initial British attacks while le Mesnil-Patry covered the Canadian attack at 1 pm. This is another Glenn Saunders scenario and runs for 6 turns. We're still testing this scenario and I'm thinking it might be a couple of turns too short

Imagen

#0611_03: Le Hamel - The Salient combines both Cristot and le Mesnil-Patry for a very interesting 14 turn battle. It's much clearer how the Allies assailed the German defenses from both flanks;

Imagen

Jeff Conner sent through (I believe!!) the last scenario he is doing in his Goodwood series - #0719_01 Goodwood Day 2; 11th Armoured Division. This engagement covers the second days fighting and the final attempt by 11th Armoured Division to breakthrough the German defenses. This is another fast moving 12 turn scenario;

Imagen

We now move back to the previous chronology. The next three scenarios are based around Operation Luttich and the fighting at Mortain. All three have been created by Glenn Saunders.

The first scenario in the trilogy is #0807_01: Mortain - The Lost Battalion. This is a moderate sized scenario but only runs for 8 turns. Glenn tends to specialise in these small, very quick scenarios (I think I'm on the other end of the spectrum!). Here is the zoomed out screenshot for Hill 314 where 2-120th Infantry Battalion held off elements of 2nd SS Division Das Reich.

Imagen

Detalles de las defensas en la colina

Imagen

#0808_01: Hill 285 - Clipping the Hedges runs for 6 turns. The Germans wanted to clear Hill 285 as it dominated a key road needed to continue the advance. It was a bloody fight in the bocage;

Imagen

The last engagement today is #0808_02: Mortain - Counter in the South. This is another 6 turn scenario. A mixed German force takes on the green US 35th Infantry Division which has been rushed into a gap that was forming in the American lines as the 30th Infantry Division was pushed back. How far can the crack German units advance?

Imagen
