Today, I placed this post at the Gettysburg Online Society Forum.
-This post is in response to Reply #4 posted above on June 4, 2010 by Graeme Cook regarding MikeShot's comments on Software Utilities that that can help with the fast scrolling problems associated with older games and high speed PCs.
There are many free slowdown utilities available, however simply running a slowdown utility on a multi-processor PC, will not necessarily solve the fast scrolling problem . As MikeShot pointed out in the above post, the trick is to place both the slowdown program and the game on their own dedicated processor.
To place a slowdown program and a game on a single processor, you can use your own PC's Task Manager. You will need to do this every time you want to play a game. Because the game has to be running before you can set it's Affinity (that is, place it on a single processor), at times you will receive the error message "access denied". As a result, the game will need to be restarted, and several attempts may be needed to complete the process of setting the Affinity.
A better solution is to use a program designed to place your games and slowdown utilities on a single processor, and not use your PC's Task Manager. MikeShot pointed out such a program located at French website, and it is called the Bill2's Process Manager. MikeShot wrote his original post in 2008, and since then, the Bill2's Process Manager is now available at several download sites located in the US. Bill2's Process Manager is a free program that will allow you to load all of your game and slowdown utility .exe's into it, direct those programs to run on a single processor, and most importantly, it saves the settings. You only have to do this once. The next time you want to play a particular game, it will already be preset to run on only one processor along with the slowdown utility. The help section of Bill2's Process Manager, however, is written in French. I have written four "How To" papers with detailed step-by-step instructions on:
1. "ReadMe - Slow Scrolling Speed" . This paper will tell where you can go to download the Bill2's Process Manager and a slowdown utility. In this case, I am using Turbo.
2. "How to Install Bill2's Process Manager and Turbo" (in particular, on Windows 7)
3. "How to Use Bill2's Process Manager". Detailed step by step instructions written in English - including step by step pictures of the utility.
4. "How to Use the Turbo utility". Detailed step by step instructions, on how to use the Turbo utility, and how to adjust scrolling speeds of a game "on the fly".
These papers can be downloaded in a packet called "SlowdownFastScrolling". The packet can be downloaded at three different locations. Look for it near the top of the web page.
