El arqueólogo, historiador e ilustrador Peter Connolly falleció el 3 de Mayo. Sé que viene con retraso la noticia, pero me acabo de enterar, y es una pena. Que descanse en paz este gran hombre cuyos libros y sus ilustraciones me han llevado a tener aún más interés por la historia antigua.

Peter Connolly (1935 - 3 May 2012) was a renowned British scholar of the ancient world, Greek and Roman military equipment historian, reconstructional archaeologist and illustrator. A research Fellow at Oxford in England, and a talented artist, his accurate and detailed illustrations of the Classical world are well regarded. Connolly was a regular contributor to such periodicals as the Journal of Roman Military Equipment and Roman Frontier Studies.

Biography
Connolly studied at the Brighton College of Arts and Crafts and wrote his first book, The Roman Army, in 1975.

Connolly has also written and illustrated many books about the ancient world, several of them for children, including Pompeii, Greece and Rome at War, The Greek Armies, The Roman Army and the award-winning Legend of Odysseus. His 2003 book Colosseum: Rome's Arena of Death debunks many of the myths perpetuated about that structure in the movie Gladiator.

Connolly regularly appeared on television as an expert on ancient armies and their equipment, and in the 1980s presented a series for UK schools called "An Archaeological Background to the Gospels" in which he travelled to ancient sites in Israel, illustrating the programmes with his own paintings, many of which appeared in his book Living in the Time of Jesus of Nazareth.

Connolly became a member of the Society of Antiquaries in 1984 and a year later was awarded an honorary research fellowship at the Institute of Archaeology of the University College London.

Yo de pequeño estaba enganchado de una forma difícil de creer a un libro de ejércitos griegos. No me acuerdo del título, pero esos dibujos, esas lanzas de metros de longitud, esas corazas de lino, las máquinas de asedio! Bueno, es que flipaba.

Desde aquí mi humilde homenaje en forma de recuerdo de esos momentos.

Pues juraría que en español (y en total) solo había dos: Los ejércitos Griegos y La Leyenda de Ulises.

Lo que este hombre dibujaba otros no lo dirían ni con un millón de palabras.

Yo hablaba de los griegos. En español no tengo claro cuantos hay. El único que no he visto (por la red, porque algunos de esos libros ya son piezas muy raras) es el de Jesús. Te falta de el de la leyenda de Ulises que también está en Español.

En ingles ya es más difícil saber "cuantos" tiene, porque he visto varios muy similares que parecen actualizaciones. Por ejemplo el de las Legiones Romanas lo he visto en fasciculos (en ingles) sacados hace unos pocos años que añadían un poco más de lo que se ve en el libro y repartido entre 4.

Es una pena porque la mayoría de sus libros ya no se encuentran.
