Just a general announcement, Dominions 4 is now available on Steam. You can activate your Desura key on Steam to add Dom4 to your Steam library.

If you have problems with the resolution, you can force the game to use the desired resolution with a command line switch (-res x y) and also to use a windowed mode (-w). That should solve most problems.

The cities and such on the maps are just map graphics, not special features. Provinces that have the cities are often farmland, so high gold income and high population.

Not Taro, but I am surprised at the bad experiences with Desura. The beauty of it is that you do not need to install the Desura program, you can download full game installers and update manually when a patch comes out.
